Congratulations! You are expecting, and we couldn’t be happier for you! This is a very exciting time for you and your family. You are probably jumping into all sorts of reading and and information about what you should and should not do while you are expecting. You’ll find lists that are miles long, and all of that information can be overwhelming! As you sort through all of the information, there is one note we hope you notice: the importance of seeing a dentist.
Your body will be changing in many, many ways over the next few months. It is all guided by the hormonal changes that are also causing your mood swings, exhaustion, and sleepiness. Your oral health will also be affected. Women who are pregnant are more likely to develop gum disease, which is a big problem because gum disease is linked to preterm birth.
Protecting Yourself
It is important to take precautionary measures to protect yourself from a gum disease infection. Be sure that you are flossing, brushing well, and consider adding an antiseptic rinse to your routine. You should also plan to come in for a cleaning at least once during your pregnancy. That visit will give us a chance to clean your teeth but to also remove the beginning of any infection that might be lurking around your gums.
